How to prepare for your child’s portrait session?
Depending on the type of session we are planning might require different preparation however there are a few good ideas to always be keeping in mind.
The age of you child.
New born children and even through the first year will photograph better once they have had a nap – are clean – and fed. You might want to put them in the outfit you would like them to be photographed in before you leave the your home. Then feed them once you arrive at our studio. Put yourself in their shoes. Your mom has taken you to a strange place in funny clothing or worse, is dressing you in that place you have never been with people you have never seen before, and your hungry. Would you cry? I would! Most of us are still happier with a full belly and clean clothing on right?
Most children are either photographed on an all White Backdrop or high key (I prefer this for the first year composite sessions) or an all black or low-key backdrop. How you dress your child matters. Dark colors go better with dark backgrounds and light and colorful clothing go better with light backgrounds. I don’t get into the real busy, goofy painted and dated backdrops you see at the department stores. Frankly I just don’t have the time to waste being cheesy, I like the images I create to be timeless and ones the child will enjoy viewing as an adult, not embarrassed that he had his picture taken with a purple dinosaur or something like that.
Props – I want you to bring your child’s favorite things to be photographed with. Portraits are always more fun to view and enjoy if they have meaning or tell a story. Simple thing like a rocking horse or rocking chair, a book or single toy make a portrait of your child personal. Yes, even that silly dinosaur would be OK as a prop, just not painted on the background I just can’t get into that. The key is special, personal, one of a kind art of your child at that age and time in his or her life. You never get this moment back. They are only this size once and every child is different. Professional photographs are a great way to FREEZE TIME.
By the way you might be wandering what if this ends up being a bad night for my child? All she did was cry during the photography session then what?
I stand behind every portrait I make – If your not Thrilled I’ll make more – Period, end of discussion, we will work with you and your child even if it takes more than one session to get you images you like. I guarantee it!
